Luke 19:1–10

Welcome to the Jesus March! We’re so glad you are here!
Jesus often led His disciples through cities and towns, and today, in London, He is doing it again, by His Holy Spirit! Once, when He rode humbly into the city on a donkey, the crowds welcomed Him with joyful singing and shouts of ‘Hosanna! Hosanna!’, which means Save, O God. Jesus’ name means God saves, and as we walk we pray that His saving presence will fill the streets and charge the atmosphere with grace, mercy, truth, and power to save, releasing joy and hope to everyone around us.
We expect that people will encounter Jesus and His salvation today! As He taught and preached out in the open air and on city streets, thousands gathered, yet He had time for individuals, calling them by name, healing, forgiving, and restoring. Do you have faith for that today?
We are a crowd of thousands here today, but before we begin marching, let’s take a moment to acknowledge that we are all individually known and loved by God, and that He has done wonderful things in our lives.
Listen to this eyewitness account recorded in Luke’s gospel chapter 19.
A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. He wanted to see Jesus, but he was too short! So he ran ahead and climbed a tree … Jesus looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down! I must come to your house today.” All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.”
But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.” Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house … for I came to seek and to save the lost.”
Luke 19:1–10

Today, we gather as a saved people. What are we saved from? The famous hymn sums it up, ‘Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost but now I’m found, was blind but now I see.’ Saved from our sin, our guilt, our shame, from the just desserts of our sins, from the power of our own destructive and selfish ways, from the corruption of the world, from wasting our lives. The name Jesus means God saves! Are you grateful for that today?
Before we march, let’s place our hands on our hearts, and thank Jesus for saving us. Let’s also pray for individuals who will see us as we pass by, and those in Trafalgar Square, that they would encounter Jesus and His salvation today!
So let’s pray those very words of Jesus now – your answering shout is; ‘Salvation has come to this house!’
Over all of our lives and our homes …
All
Salvation has come to this house!
Leader
Over every church family, large or small, represented here today …
All
Salvation has come to this house!
Leader
And on this Pentecost weekend, by the power of the Holy Spirit in us, we declare this hope over all of London’s families, homes, communities, institutions, and businesses:
All
Salvation has come to this house!
Leader
Once again!
All
Salvation has come to this house!
Leader
Everyone can be fully involved today, in songs, shouts, prayers, even silence, so listen to the cues through the loudspeakers, and if you find yourself out of earshot, don’t stop, pray your own prayers, pray a scripture, start a song, look around you and pray about what you see! Are you ready? So as we begin our Jesus March, let’s welcome Him with loud applause, shouts, and singing!
This is the Day of Salvation
This is the day of salvation
The kingdom of God is here
This is the hour of His favour
His Spirit and power are here
Come as you are, you will be changed
Give Him your heart and you will never be the same

And Can It Be
And can it be that I should gain
An int’rest in the Saviour’s blood?
Died He for me, who caused His pain?
For me, who Him to death pursued?
Amazing love! how can it be
That Thou, my God, should die for me?
Long my imprisoned spirit lay
Fast bound in sin and nature’s night
Thine eye diffused a quick’ning ray
I woke, the dungeon flamed with light
My chains fell off, my heart was free
I rose, went forth and followed Thee
No condemnation now I dread
Jesus, and all in Him is mine
Alive in Him, my living Head
And clothed in righteousness divine
Bold I approach th’eternal throne
And claim the crown, through Christ my own

Shackles
You took the shackles off my feet so I can dance
I just want to praise You, I just want to praise You
You broke the chains now
I can lift my hands
And I’m gonna praise You, I’m gonna praise You
Been through the fire and the rain
Bound in every kind of way
But God has broken every chain
So let me go right now

After meeting Zaccheus, Jesus headed towards the city. On the way, He sent His disciples ahead for a donkey for Him to ride. Why a donkey? Why not a war horse, a golden carriage, or armed soldiers?
It was a sign – that He was the humble saviour prophesied in the ancient scriptures, and that His kingdom is about heaven’s joy, peace, justice, and self-sacrificial love, not human force.
Great crowds accompanied Him, singing, cheering, and praising God for the miracles they had seen, for all the great things He had done. Has God done great things for you? Do you have a cheer for Jesus to welcome Him into London today!
We’re going to spell out His name, J-E-S-U-S, followed by a great cheer – are you ready? After me …

We love Him because He came with great humility, and began a revolution of love that is changing the world one heart at a time across the earth.
Many in His day sought change through violent means, but Jesus showed a better way. He was riding towards a cross – days later He would be crucified. The King of kings humbled Himself even to death on a cross – He died so we could live. That’s why He is worthy of all of our worship and praise.
When people tried to silence the joyful crowd, Jesus replied, ‘If they stay silent, even the rocks will cry out’ in praise. The whole of creation joins in the worship of King Jesus! Let’s join with their praise, and all creation’s praise. Let’s worship with great joy and rejoicing! Waving our flags and hands and shouting to praise Him with everything we’ve got!

All life comes from our God, he is the source of everything.
Scripture calls us to pray for all those who carry authority in this world, that they may rule with justice and in goodness. Let’s pray this together.

The Servant King
From heav’n You came helpless babe
Entered our world Your glory veiled
Not to be served but to serve
And give Your life, that we might live
This is our God, the servant King
He calls us now to follow Him
And give our lives as a daily offering
Of worship to the Servant King
There in the garden of tears
My heavy load He chose to bear
His heart with sorrow was torn
‘Yet not My will but Yours’ He said
Come see His hands and His feet
The scars that speak of sacrifice
Hands that flung stars into space
To cruel nails surrendered
So let us learn how to serve
And in our lives enthrone Him
Each other’s needs to prefer
For it is Christ we’re serving

Oh Praise The Name
I cast my mind to Calvary
Where Jesus bled and died for me
I see His wounds, His hands, His feet
My Saviour on that cursed tree
His body bound and drenched in tears
They laid Him down in Joseph’s tomb
The entrance sealed by heavy stone
Messiah still and all alone
O praise the name of the Lord our God
O praise His name forevermore
For endless days we will sing Your praise
O Lord, O Lord our God
Then on the third at break of dawn
The Son of heaven rose again
O trampled death where is your sting
The angels roar for Christ the King
He shall return in robes of white
The blazing sun shall pierce the night
And I will rise among the saints
My gaze transfixed on Jesus’ face

Welcome to Trafalgar Square! We’re here to celebrate Jesus, and His love for this world!
Jesus is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. And He is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything He might be preeminent. For in Him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of His cross.
On Pentecost Weekend we say with all our hearts that we choose to follow Jesus, and live according to His kingdom.
As He arrived in the city, the people welcomed Him as they would welcome a great king – as a sign of devotion they took off their coats, and laid them on the ground for Him to ride over.
As we pray this next prayer, you might want to make a gesture of a similar kind. We can’t place an item of clothing on the ground here, but – if you are able to – shall we take off a coat or a scarf or jumper or hat as a gesture of devotion, as our heart’s response to Jesus’ example of love, humility and sacrifice?
I will pray, and this time your response is, ‘Jesus, be first in my heart.’
People look at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart.
All
Jesus, be first in my heart.

On the first Pentecost, there were people from many nations all around the world gathered in that city.
That day was the birth of the church and right from that moment there were many nations represented and many languages spoken.
In fact, the Bible says there was a gathering of people from every nation under heaven when God poured out His Holy Spirit! And here we are on Pentecost today, praying for an outpouring of God’s Spirit, with embassies around us from Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas!
We invite you to repeat this prayer for blessing of the nations from Psalm 67, line by line after me: May God be gracious to us and bless us

Hear these words, people of God:
[Jesus] came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. For through Him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit. Why would I not worship forever ‘cause I’ve seen the good you’ve done?
And I’m not ashamed, I’m a sinner saved, no, I’m not afraid anymore
What the world calls foolish, You call freedom, now I won’t hold back anymore

God is on the move in this nation, particularly amongst young people.
More and more young adults and children are choosing to follow Jesus, and it is wonderful to see. We pray and long for the next generation to have their hearts set on fire for Jesus so that they can change this world for Him!
In the days of Jesus, some leaders looked down on children’s worship, but Jesus’ response was powerful and clear.
But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things He did and the children shouting in the temple courts, ‘Hosanna to the Son of David,’ they were indignant. ‘Do you hear what these children are saying?’ they asked Him. ‘Yes,’ replied Jesus, ‘have you never read, “From the lips of children and infants You, Lord, have called forth Your praise”?’

Weeping and Praying Over the City – Luke 19:41–42
Leader
The heart of God is full of love for this city of London! Each life is sacred, every person made in His image, unique and precious to Him.
But He is also weeping. Shortly after His triumphant and joyful approach into the city, Jesus stops and looks around and weeps over it.
We know that Jesus weeps for the city of London, and all the cities around the world. He weeps over the homelessness, abuse, violence, murder, death and division. He weeps for the young people who are struggling with anxiety, depression and self-esteem. He weeps with people who are lonely, neglected and trapped in poverty. He has compassion on the crowds who are like ‘sheep without a shepherd’.
Let’s take these counter-cultural promises of Jesus from His most famous sermon, the Sermon on the Mount, and pray them over our city now (Matt 5:3–10):
Blessed are the poor in spirit …
All
… for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Leader
Blessed are those who mourn …

Blessed are the meek …

Blessed are the merciful …

… for they will be shown mercy.
Leader
Blessed are the pure in heart …

… for they will see God.
Leader
Blessed are the peacemakers …
All
… for they will be called children of God.

Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness …

Our prayers today carry the power of His resurrection life. Our prayers can change the atmosphere, transform lives and pierce the darkness that hangs over London.
At Pentecost we celebrate that the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead now lives in us!

Freedom
My life is not the same
Your love has rescued me
Everything has changed
I’m living in your liberty
No chains holding me
Since I’ve been set free
Your blood has washed my sins away
I have the victory
Freedom yes I’m singing
Freedom yes I’m dancing
Freedom yes I’m shouting
Freedom to walk right
Freedom to talk right
Freedom to live right
In the power of the Holy Spirit
Freedom
Freedom
Freedom
Freedom yes

This is Amazing Grace
Who breaks the power of sin and darkness?
Whose love is mighty and so much stronger?
The King of glory, the King above all kings
Who shakes the whole earth with holy thunder?
And leaves us breathless in awe and wonder?
The King of glory, the King above all kings
This is amazing grace
This is unfailing love
That You would take my place
That You would bear my cross
You laid down Your life
That I would be set free
Oh Jesus I sing for all that You’ve done for me
Who brings our chaos back into order?
Who makes the orphans a son and daughter?
The King of glory, the King above all kings
Who rules the nations with truth and justice?
Shines like the sun in all of its brilliance?
The King of glory, the King above all kings
Worthy is the Lamb who was slain
Worthy is the King who conquered the grave (repeat)
